First round of the Scottish Cup on home soil (Or 3g artificial to be precise !) against the boys from Dunbeth. Almost a Lanarkshire Derby you could say!
Airdrie controlled the game from the outset and passed the ball well throughout the positions and only took 5 mins to open the scoring when a strike from Samuel Biggart was cleared away by the Dunbeth defense to be picked up by Jimmy Martin from just inside the box to pile drive home his first of the game. (The the drought started !)
The chances came although similar to the previous game the clinical finish just wasn't there. Airdrie went into the break 1 up, although with complete control of the game.
Not long into the second half and a free kick was awarded to Airdrie just outside the box. Samuel Biggart stepped up and drove a superb left foot strike low into the corner and out of the Dunbeth keeper's reach.
Jimmy Martin doubled his score tally by accepting a long ball from Taelor Meharry which he placed into the net.
Several minutes later and a great solo effort from Kyle McLean passing several Dunbeth players to calmly put his name on the scoresheet.
55 minutes and from David Henderson a left field pass into the box was cleared away as far as Steven Cahill who caught on his right foot and scooped the ball into the top right corner.
58 minutes and with hardly any time to record the last goal Jimmy Martin was brought down and a penalty awarded. Kyle McLean was put forward and slotted home his second and Airdrie's 6th.
On 60 minutes and from Steven Cahill's corner Adam Dunlop positioned himself exactley right to score his first and take the game out of the hands of an already down trodden Dunbeth.
Ryan Ralston on 75 minutes from a Kyle McLean shot palmed away by the Dunbeth keeper was in the right place to shoot and score into the waiting net.
McLean completed his hat trick just before the finish with a great strike which travelled a pace and came in off the post to end the game at 9-0.
Encouraging game of football with some great passing and confidence from the lads to take them comfortably into the next round.

Westfield BC (1) Airdrie (2)

First away game at a rather damp and soggy Cumbernauld. Airdrie commanded from the outset by controlling the play with some fantastic interchanges down both flanks. Chance after chance came however the ball just couldn't reach the back of the net. 5 corners in 20 minutes and still no connection at the end of them. As always in these games when the play is all one sided one thing is sure to happen........The other team scores. A defensive error cost Airdrie the first goal.
Not to be down beat the players quickly took centre and attacked time and time again. Numerous shots went over, or to the side of the woodwork and it did seem like one of those nights.
The young Diamonds were denied a goal when a pressure pot of players in the box (Call it a stramash if you will !) culminated in the ball going over the line aided by Taelor Meharry, which the ref thought he had handled and helped on the way home. A protest from Kyle Mclean earned the forward a yellow at this stage and the outlook was looking grim.
However, Late in the second half after a flurry of chances the ball was skillfully taken down the right wing by Connor Cowan and crossed over into the box, the ball drifted wide left and was picked up by Steven Cahill who cut back to Ollie Meggit and the midfielder rifled the ball home into the opponents net.
The haze was starting to lift slowly from Clarky at this stage !
Again Airdrie sustained the pressure and minutes before the final whistle Jimmy Martin collected a decent ball in and ran to the by line before crossing the ball into the path of Kyle McLean to slot the winner home.
A great finish to a tentative game and well earned 3 points. If there are many more like this time to look out the "Calms" for the coaching staff !

Airdrie (3) ED Villa (3)
Steven Cahill (1) 15; Taelor Meharry (1) 19 (Jimmy Martin - A); Connor Cowan (1) 50 (Kyle Maclean - A)
First foray of this years campaign started on the home turf of Airdrie Sports Centre against East Dunbartonshire Villa. The legendary slow starting of the now under 14's didn't dissapoint and whether it was a combination of the first game on grass and the howling Rawyards wind, the team went behind after only 10 minutes against the run of play.
The equaliser wasn't too far behind from a midfield exchange with a shot on goal which was cleared off to the left. Steven Cahill picked this up and made a dart for the byline and looped a ball high into the net out of the keepers reach.
Several minutes later again Airdrie went behind, although they responded well yet again with Jimmy Martin and Taelor Meharry working well up front. A dummy from Martin allowed Meharry to fire home Airdries second of the match.
Airdrie seemed to be second to every ball and didn't clear their lines well throughout this half, allowing ED Villa through time on time. When Airdrie did receive the ball the final pass was short and indirect.
ED Villa gained the lead again just before the break and went into half time 3-2 up.
A stern half time team talk from the Coaching staff gave the young Diamonds just what they needed and they looked a far better side in the second half taking chance after chance, however couldn't capitalise on them until 50 minutes when a cut back from Kyle Maclean reached Connor Cowan who decisively shot and scored his first of the season and Airdries third.
The final 10 minutes was a flurry of all Airdrie play trying desperately for a winner from the match, which just wasn't to be.
A good positive finish to a rather nervous start and as far as the second half is concerned a decent grounding for the season ahead.

League Game: 14th April 2009
Airdrie (7) Westfield (2)
Danny Ruddy (4) 2, 4, 9, 54
Jimmy Martin (2) 50, 65
Connor Martin (1) 60
Not a great start with only 10 players, however this didnt stop Airdrie from creating a whirlwind start with goals early in the game. The first after 2 minutes came from a David Henderson flighted ball high into the box which reached Danny Ruddy who started up front on his own in this match. The forward collected the ball and slotted home his and Airdries first from close range. He quickly capitalised on this when after only 4 minutes Connor Cowan sent him another well paced pass which Ruddy collected rounding the Westfield defense and the keeper to pass through into the empty net.
Airdrie were fully in control within the first 10 minutes and looked confident on the ball with some great interchange of play between defense and midfield. Their third came from a Westfield kick out where Steven Cahill headed back high into the box to the feet of Taelor Meharry who quickly released again to Ruddy and his hat trick was gained by lobbing the Westfield keeper from the edge of the box. 3-0 and the 10 man formation seemed like a stroke of genius from Iain Clarke !
Westfield ensured that the celebrations were shortlived by snatching a goal before the break and also shortly after the restart to bring the score to a rather uncomfortable 3-2.
Airdries 11 strong team was restored by a suprise appearance from Jimmy Martin at half time. A quick check with the ref and the forward was allowed to join the team. It didnt take him long to get on the score sheet as he collected the ball from Connor Cowan and sweetly struck his first and Airdries 4th of the game.
Danny Ruddy again involved after 54 minutes as he collected the ball from an Adam Dulop lay off to strike home his fourth of the game and secure undoubtedly his Man of the match status.
Adam Dunlop took possession of a free kick, 40 yards out which he sent into the Westfiled penalty area. A poor clearance from Westfield reached Connor Martin who rifled home a great shot and took the game out of the visitors reach, and the score to 6-2.
To coin a cliche which has been used in past reports Airdries magnificent 7 finished at 65 minutes from a Danny Ruddy side pass to Jimmy Martin to allow him to shoot low and accurate into the box.
A fantastic performance all round from the boys bearing in mind the first half was played with only 10 of them and the usual keeper playing a sweepers role which he took on and relished. Look out back 4 !
